Crossing Delancey (1988)
Country: US
Technical: col 97m
Director: Joan Micklin Silver
Cast: Amy Irving, Peter Riegert
Synopsis:
A Jewish girl working in New York's oldest bookstore is manoeuvred into a match with a Lower East Side pickles merchant by her traditionalist grandmother.
Review:
Slight attempt to repeat the success of Moonstruck, but not without its pleasures. Written and directed by women, it shows the modern independent female's dilemmas in a realistic yet commercially savvy way. Riegert's straight, old-fashioned bachelor is right out of fantasy, however: surely pickles are not sufficient reason to keep such a guy single for so long?
