Contagion (2011)
Country: UAE/US/HK
Technical: col 106m
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Laurence Fishburne, Matt Damon, Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow
Synopsis:
Different interested parties - a vlogger, the WHO, the CDC - race against time and each other to find a vaccine for an uncharted and particularly virulent outbreak originating in Hong Kong. Meanwhile the family of the first victims sits out the lockdown and waits for it all to end.
Review:
The events of 2020-21 would prove horribly familiar to anyone who took heed of this film when it came out: it plays like a public information film for stopping the spread of Covid-19. Dramatically it is, like the same director's Traffic, something of a jigsaw puzzle: no one story to really get one's teeth into, no stunning performance opportunities, just a globetrotting case history as one namechecks the all-star cast. Absorbing, and armed with a chilling epilogue, it does not go for sensationalism as it lays out the predictable frailties to which all human kind is prey.
