Clash (2016)
(Eshtebak)
Country: EGY/FR
Technical: col 97m
Director: Mohamed Diab
Cast: Nelly Karim, Hani Adel, El Sebaii Mohamed, Ahmed Abdelhamid Hefny
Synopsis:
2013, Cairo: amid demonstrations on the part of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) over the removal of their Islamist government by the army, police on the ground perceive everyone as a potential agitator. Into a black maria are herded pell-mell a pair of photo-journalists, loyal citizens who mistake them for MB, and the MB themselves who, gradually after a time learn to live together in their confinement.
Review:
Naturally enough there is a sting in the tail of this immensely potent and topical essay on what in fact separates people who speak the same language and dress in the same way, when existence is reduced to the bare essentials. Answer: very little. The film-making is first-rate, the image pin-sharp, the actors seen in sweaty close-up much of the time; we see glimpses of the action outside through the windows, but otherwise remain resolutely locked up with the protagonists.
