Charley Varrick (1973)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 111m
Director: Don Siegel
Cast: Walter Matthau, Joe Don Baker, Felicia Farr, John Vernon
Synopsis:
Unwittingly stealing a significant quantity of Mob money during a bank robbery, the gang must devise a plan to evade their pursuers.
Review:
Tautly handled heist thriller with the star in untypically straight mode. The robbery is very well handled by Siegel, and with unexpected violence, while elsewhere there is a leavening of humour, relished by Baker and Vernon as heavies with a human face. The screenplay does not take its audience for chumps, either, with the dental X-ray switch not brought back to our attention at the end, but left for us to marry up.
