Champion (1949)
Country: US
Technical: bw 99m
Director: Mark Robson
Cast: Kirk Douglas, Arthur Kennedy, Paul Stewart, Ruth Roman, Lola Albright
Synopsis:
A drifter fights his way to the top of the boxing world by walking over everyone else in his life.
Review:
A boxing movie shot like a film noir, with no-good blondes, institutionalised corruption and expressionistic lighting. There is also a strong moral sense, voiced by the Stewart and Kennedy characters, that the fight business is a loser's game, a view borne out by the film's grim conclusion. Douglas gives his customary 'body and soul' performance, Robson frames with an eye to dynamic contrasts and some of the fight footage is expertly cut.
