Casbah (1948)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 94m
Director: John Berry
Cast: Tony Martin, Yvonne De Carlo, Peter Lorre, Märta Torén, Thomas Gomez

Synopsis:

Algiers: the French police are at their wits' end to arrest the notorious thief, Pepe le Moko, who uses the Casbah as his impregnable fortress. A gilded prison, until he meets Gaby, from which point it seems ever more likely that he might come out into the open.

Review:

For some reason Universal chose to remake the Wanger classic (Algiers), itself a remake of a French original, with the vocal talents of Tony Martin. The effect is curiously incongruous alongside the slapstick violence and threat of real violence. The Casbah itself is well rendered, with some attempt to turn Odette's into a version of Rick's, but it is Lorre who makes the best impression, now seemingly as infatuated as Inez with the charming Pepe, now the suave Machiavel awaiting patiently his moment.
