Carnival of Souls (1962)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 78m
Director: Herk Harvey
Cast: Candace Hilligoss, Frances Feist, Sidney Berger

Synopsis:

After surviving being run off a bridge by a bunch of rednecks, an atheistic woman drives to Utah to take up the post of organist at a church there. Meanwhile she is haunted by apparitions of ghoulish figures and inexplicably drawn to an abandoned pavilion on the edge of the salt lake outside town.

Review:

This cautionary tale of souls in purgatory might have been made as a warning against agnosticism for Mormon parishioners. The hallmarks of a low budget - shoddy acting, mismatched edits, poorly dubbed sound effects - are belied by close-ups of high quality and a central performance that cannot help but invite empathy. The deserted 'end of pier' theme park is an inspired location for the suitably chilling denouement. (Note: Christian Petzold used this forgotten drive-in classic for his film, Yella.)
