Interesting how an actor is drawn to certain roles - or they come looking for him. This one recalls both Jauja and The Road, as well as others more obliquely. His character begins the film almost a martinet of sternness, then gradually has to yield to others' expectations. The final scene reveals a compromise, between the feral extremity of the opening and out and out conformity. At times it plays almost like a comedy, at others it is deeply affecting, and the child performers are outstandingly good.
