Cape Fear (1991)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Panavision 128m
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Robert de Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, Joe Don Baker

Synopsis:

A paroled convict comes after the lawyer who failed to produce a piece of evidence at his trial which might have greatly reduced his sentence.

Review:

All-stops treatment of the 1962 original, including a Saul Bass title sequence, an amplified rehash of the Herrmann score and cameos from Mitchum, Peck and Balsam. De Niro is terrifying and the tension is unbearable, though the dénouement uncomfortably recalls a slasher film with its invincible villain. On the whole Scorsese's version makes more of the dysfunctional family situation, with a strange bond forming between the daughter and Cady by virtue of the fact that the parental relationship has failed. There is a sense in which Cady's revenge is constructive, in restoring the family unit to a notion of self-worth. As he himself says: 'I'm here to save you.'
