Set among the Florida keys, with an unsavoury Mitchum particularly impressive, this is a lurid piece of melodrama indeed, foreshadowing the likes of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. It is hampered by censorship restrictions of the time, though in hindsight one wonders how they got away with what they did. The last twenty-five minutes is a pretty terrifying ordeal of sustained peril, breathless even today.
