Caligula (1979)
Country: IT
Technical: col 150m
Director: Tinto Brass, Giancarlo Lui, Bob Guccione
Cast: Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, John Gielgud, Peter O'Toole
Synopsis:
The lurid career of the third Julian emperor, from his fawning on his predecessor Tiberius to his assassination.
Review:
Abominably written historic melodrama, from a Gore Vidal original, eschewing the literateness and restraint of BBC's I, Claudius for a haphazard display of limp flesh and gory set pieces. The level of characterisation is best exemplified in the portrayal of Claudius as an effete eunuch. (Some stronger material was shot under Penthouse's direction with somewhat less limp fleshy bits.)
