The Bodyguard (1992)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 129m
Director: Mick Jackson
Cast: Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston, Gary Kemp

Synopsis:

A former presidential bodyguard reluctantly takes the job of protecting a Rhythm and Blues singer, but finds her uncooperative and a liability.

Review:

A hit song and good star chemistry helped propel this half-baked romantic thriller into grossing triple figures. It is not Kasdan's best script, with characters conforming thanklessly to type, Houston in particular having to make do with being by turns a bitch, a seductress, then a bitch again, and only finally a cringeing wreck crying out to be saved. The intrigue is all too apparently a fabulation hung onto a guiding concept, and the twin aggressor gambit makes no kind of sense, the producers being far more interested in the interracial romance aspect. Costner shoulders the part well, and it was a stepping stone to more mature roles, but for Houston it was all too horribly prophetic.
