The Blue Bird (1940)
Country: US
Technical: col/bw 98m
Director: Walter Lang
Cast: Shirley Temple, Johnny Russell, Gale Sondergaard, Eddie Collins
Synopsis:
A fairy takes two woodcutter's children on a journey to find the legendary Blue Bird of Happiness.
Review:
No doubt intended as a riposte to MGM's The Wizard of Oz, this part monochrome, part colour moral fairytale from Fox has splendid settings and Technicolor but was a box office disappointment: audiences used to seeing the story revolve around Miss Temple were instead treated to a fable in which she was but one of the component parts.
