Around the time when producers did not seem to know what to do with Ladd (cf. Boy on a Dolphin, Santiago), who was really only at home in Westerns and crime films. This was one of those co-productions with a Hollywood actor fronting a British supporting cast, and Columbia were clearly having a go at MGM's mining of similar territory with Robert Taylor. It's not quite as risible as The Black Shield of Falworth but getting there. Heath Ledger would appear in a similar, more humorous, film: The Knight's Tale.
