The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 89m
Director: Frank Capra
Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Nils Asther

Synopsis:

An American missionary in China becomes separated from her husband and is taken up by a warlord. She intercedes on the part of his mistress and becomes increasingly attracted to him, but cannot save him from the weakness she has exposed.

Review:

Excellent atmosphere and visuals, together with Asther's performance, balanced between menace and flippancy, distinguish this last of the red hot melodramas for some time. Some of Capra's beloved social themes surprisingly raise their heads but are quickly drowned in the oriental opulence. A fascinating and richly entertaining treasure of censorship evasion.
