Buck and the Preacher (1972)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 102m
Director: Sidney Poitier, (Joseph Sargent)
Cast: Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, Cameron Mitchell, Julie Robinson

Synopsis:

A former negro army sergeant turned wagon master devotes himself to protecting black settlers moving west after the Civil War from cutthroat nightriders intent on turning them back to the plantations. He is joined by a renegade preacher and aided by the Indians.

Review:

Surely one of the inspirations for Tarantino's Django, which it very much resembles in spirit, Poitier's black Western is humane yet action-packed, as his Buck puts more and more on the line to help his brothers and sisters. Indeed it is that negro solidarity that this characterful film exudes, helped by Benny Carter's cheeky harmonica-plus-saxophone (?) soundtrack.
