Bringing Up Baby (1938)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 102m
Director: Howard Hawks
Cast: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, May Robson, Charles Ruggles

Synopsis:

A zoologist is diverted from his task of securing finance for his museum by a distracted heiress who stops him from appearing at his own wedding, scuppers his chances with the prospective donor and separates him from the last remaining bone of his precious Brontosaurus. To say nothing of the chaos wreaked by her young pet leopard.

Review:

The ne plus ultra of screwball, the typically 30s genre exemplified by Nothing Sacred. His Girl Friday added cynical social comment into the mix, but this was pure off-the-wall zaniness owing much to the spirit of Labiche (The Italian Straw Hat). Leopard-wielding sex kitten Hepburn's relentless attack of the verbals, and Hawks's restless blocking and George Hively's editing combine with the already incident-packed narrative to leave the viewer breathless. Fortunately when laughter is enervated you can bask in the star quality.
