Here we go again, and don't be misled by the authorial branding: this version is no closer to Stoker than countless others. Indeed, in its operatic overstatement it could be counted a travesty! Coppola does spend longer on all the prehistory mumbo-jumbo, but that wasn't in the novel; surprisingly, the three vampire brides were (Monica Bellucci in an early role). He also has Oldman and Hopkins talk in absurd East European accents and puts in a deafening score. Enjoyable as a romp, it could prove unintentionally funny today, and the 90s had far better in store for bloodsucker fans.
