Blood Simple (1985)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 99m
Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Cast: Frances McDormand, John Getz, Dan Hedaya

Synopsis:

A bartender plans to steal from his boss but ends up killing him. Making him dead and disposing of the body prove a good deal more problematic, but his troubles really start in earnest when he and his wife are blackmailed by a private dick over his knowledge of the crime.

Review:

This arresting first feature from the Coen brothers can now be seen to contain some of the themes that would figure prominently in their body of work (little guy unable to deal with the implications of his pathetic crime), but which at the time seemed like a neo-noir with an unusually well calibrated command of narrative. The daringly dark cinematography and mumbled dialogue do not endear it to the small screen, but it has a great sense of style and some heart-stopping moments. The cast delivers sweatily committed performances.
