Be Kind Rewind (2008)

£0.00

Country: US/GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 102m
Director: Michel Gondry
Cast: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz

Synopsis:

Adherents of a condemned New Jersey video store inadvertently erase the entire stock when the boss is away, and set about making their own 'Sweded' versions of the most in-demand titles. Soon these have become a cult almost as powerful as the building's putative connection with jazz hero, Fats Waller.

Review:

The director's free-ranging imagination is given fertile ground with this engaging concept, the execution of which ignores the practicalities of shooting and editing quantities of video material in the time given, instead going for the broad strokes of grungily re-enacted favourite scenes from such as Ghostbusters and Robocop, and resourceful appropriations of found materials and technology. The comedic dividends are low-key, but the film has at its heart a Capra-esque concern for community values and the joy of making (and, in the final scene, screening) movies together.
