The Aftermath (2019)

£0.00

Country: GER/GB/US
Technical: col 108m
Director: James Kent
Cast: Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke, Alexander Skarsgård, Flora Thiemann

Synopsis:

1945: a British army couple posted to Hamburg for the clean-up are billeted on the house of a well-to-do architect and his daughter. Both families have been bereaved by the bombings, but while the British colonel deals with pro-Nazi terrorists his wife is increasingly drawn to the mild-mannered but proud German.

Review:

Dealing with the human cost of the war in a manner different to This Happy Breed, say, Kent's film soars with shots of aerial devastation and personal memories in extreme close-up, but snags on more familiar narrative ground (marital betrayal with handsome stranger). Consequently, the Germany Year Zero elements compete for the crumbs of audience attention lulled by generic scenes of breathy passion, and the sidelined husband must make a last-minute bid for our sympathy. That said, the performances are uniformly excellent and the production has quality in spades.
