The Adventures of Hajji Baba (1954)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 93m
Director: Don Weis
Cast: John Derek, Elaine Stewart, Thomas Gomez
Synopsis:
In old Persia the Caliph's daughter tries to elope but is intercepted by a barber's son seeking his fortune.
Review:
Hilarious Arabian Nights hokum, taking at face value the presence of colour and dancing girls as the qualifying ingredients, and accompanying its 'same-bit-of-desert-as-before' antics with Nat King Cole hypnotically crooning: 'Hajji, Hajji, Hajji…'. Derek copes with a brattish princess while uttering lines like: 'Complaints fall from you like water from the springs of El Bikir,' or the stage direction variety: 'Dismount, and follow me.' The production itself (Walter Wanger) is beyond reproach, the direction brisk, even saucy; all of which makes this little known film seem like a deliberate exercise in high camp. Further sample dialogue: 'Disrobe, if you will; I shall count a hundred stars!'
