The Aviator (2004)

£0.00

Country: US/GER
Technical: col/Super 35 170m
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, John C. Reilly, Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda, Ian Holm, Danny Huston, Jude Law (as Errol Flynn)

Synopsis:

The career and foibles of Howard Hughes, from the runaway production of Hell's Angels to the maiden flight of the Hercules, aka Spruce Goose.

Review:

A rare event: a biopic which contrives to be watchable, mythic and truthful - or at least persuasive - in equal proportions. There is a great impersonation from Blanchett (Katharine Hepburn) and a superb performance from DiCaprio, who gradually takes on the role like a mantle. The aerial scenes are thrilling, and evenly spaced at peaks through the movie, but there are other highlights, not least the sparring with the senatorial enquiry near the end of the film, which smells suspiciously of Hollywood grandstanding but is brilliantly realized nonetheless.
