The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004)

£0.00

Country: US/MEX
Technical: col 95m
Director: Niels Mueller
Cast: Sean Penn, Jack Thompson, Naomi Watts, Don Cheadle

Synopsis:

A former tyre salesman separated from his wife and family takes a job as salesman in an office furniture store, but again resents having to lie in order to make a sale. As Watergate explodes across the TV screens and yet the president remains in power, he becomes disgruntled about how money seems to determine everything in his country and how the self-respect of the common man is trampled. He determines to hijack a plane and fly it into the White House.

Review:

Good performances do not quite ensure conviction and the climactic hijack is a curiously flat affair. The historical background is deftly sketched in but the circumstances of the hapless antihero do not seem desperate enough: why not just take a different type of job? Nevertheless, as a portrait of the kind of nobody who can cause untold damage in places like Oklahoma it is a timely reminder of their humanity.
