The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

£0.00

Country: US/CAN
Technical: Technicolor/2.35:1 160m
Director: Andrew Dominik
Cast: Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Mary-Louise Parker, Paul Schneider, Sam Rockwell

Synopsis:

The youngest of the Ford brothers asks to be one of the James gang and despite being greeted with contempt is successful. However, times are not at their easiest for the ageing James and he is riven with doubts and suspicions surrounding the loyalties of his men. Ultimately, both through happenstance and disposition, Ford is inclined to betray his idol rather than die with, or for, him.

Review:

A superb looking western which draws on some of the aesthetic of the 1970s greats, from Josey Wales to The Hired Hand, but adds a sense of the archaic with its gauzily bordered images. The sense of life being hard and safety precarious is finely caught and the performances, always at the centre of things, make this one of the most cerebral westerns ever made.
