L'amant double (2017)

£0.00

(Double Lover)

Country: FR/BEL
Technical: col/2.35:1 107m
Director: François Ozon
Cast: Marine Vacth, Jérémie Renier, Jacqueline Bisset

Synopsis:

A young woman unable to obtain a diagnosis for stomach cramps visits a psychiatrist who apparently cures her. Then she begins an affair with him and things unravel in increasingly nightmarish fashion.

Review:

The prolific director continues to channel Buñuel, Hitchcock and Almodóvar, this time throwing in some Cronenbergian flourishes for good measure. His storytelling skills and undeniable formal elegance come, however, at the service of a preposterous premise to do with so-called 'cannibal foetuses'. The glacial nymphomaniac heroine, the twin doctors as both rapist and victim by strap-on, the disappearing cat, okay, but paranoid schizophrenia via foetus? Did no one reality check the screenplay before advancing 7 million euros? We are left with a scenario that conjoins Marnie and Rebecca and leads us through bouts of energetic sex towards a grand-guignol conclusion where you don't know what to believe, if you still care.
