L'Âge d'Or (1930)

£0.00

Country: FR
Technical: bw 63m silent
Director: Luis Buñuel
Cast: Gaston Modot, Lya Lys

Synopsis:

Passion and disorder struggle for expression against the repressive power of the church and bourgeois society, but ultimately Christ joins the four dissolutes of Sade's 120 Days of Sodom in their castle of debauch.

Review:

Buñuel and Dalí went too far this time: their film was banned and they had to leave the country to work elsewhere, but this is a film like no other, full of scandalous images and uproarious humour. The skill lies in not labouring the surreal jokes so that they become mannered or predictable. With hindsight, as Europe hurtled towards the worst decade of the twentieth century, the affronts seem entirely merited.
