Azor (2021)

£0.00

Country: SW/FR/ARG
Technical: col 100m
Director: Andreas Fontana
Cast: Fabrizio Rongione, Stéphanie Cléau, Alexandre Trocki

Synopsis:

A Swiss banker travels to Buenos Aires with his wife in search of clientèle, uneasily aware that his predecessor, who has gone missing, was engaged in unethical practices that appear to have endeared him to some in Argentinian high society.

Review:

This austerely elegant film flirts with the cinematic universe of Costa-Gavras, but tells you nothing of what the characters appear to understand only too well. A raised eyebrow here, a coded expression there, while locations such as a hotel swimming pool or a racetrack appear freighted with their historic significance. Self-consciously referencing Heart of Darkness in its setup, river journey, even the name (Keys) of its absent hero (deliberately evoking that of Kurtz), it's like poring over the delicate workings of a Swiss watch: arcane, refined, and just a little bit soporific.
