Away from Her (2006)

£0.00

Country: CAN/GB/US
Technical: Technicolor 109m
Director: Sarah Polley
Cast: Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent, Olympia Dukakis, Michael Murphy

Synopsis:

A long married couple living in Canada are struggling to cope with the wife's worsening Alzheimer's condition. Her decision to go into a home signals a period of massive readjustment in their relationship, as the husband witnesses her growing attachment to another male patient and fights to remain a part of her existence.

Review:

Edited together like an Egoyan film (Polley starred in The Sweet Hereafter) and shot in steady, lingering medium close-ups of its excellent cast, this directorial debut has a cumulative power and a luminous clarity common to films set in the northern latitudes. In one sense, like Snow Cake, a close up view of a disease many will know little about, it deals more profoundly with those things that really constitute a relationship, which have to do with time and memory, as well as with the differing perspectives of male and female as to the success of their couple.
