Country: FR/CAN
Technical: col/2.35:1 117m
Director: Albert Dupontel
Cast: Albert Dupontel, Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Laurent Lafitte, Niels Arestrup, Emilie Dequenne, Mélanie Thierry

Synopsis:

Two comrades in arms emerge from the trenches, one disfigured by a shell blast, the other psychologically scarred, only to find themselves penniless in Paris. They mastermind a scheme to peddle war memorial designs to the bereaved communes of France, and decamp with the proceeds. Meanwhile their nemesis, Lieutenant D'Aulnay Pradelle, placed in charge of relocating the war dead, has devised his own little scam, and married into the family.

Review:

Pierre Lemaître's excoriating satire on the revenge of the cannon fodder class is here given comic strip treatment by Dupontel. It is a solution to the challenge of encompassing the wealth of detail contained in the novel, but of necessity misses out on the revulsion and utter cynicism of the twin scandals. The star is also much too old. On the plus side, it is superbly mounted, has a sense of grace and movement that is impeccably French, reminding one of L'Herbier and Clair, besides J-P Jeunet.
