Asteroid City (2023)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 (bw/1.33:1) 105m
Director: Wes Anderson
Cast: Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, Maya Hawke

Synopsis:

We witness a play being created, from writing to rehearsal to execution, but keep cutting back to the rehearsal stage, where the leading players are caught at a watering hole in Arizona, home to a meteor crater and place of pilgrimage for star gazers and inter-galactic souvenir hunters.

Review:

An awful lot of navel gazing too, in this feature length doodle from the master of form over content. Anderson's dialogue reads more than ever as if plundered from the pages of Britannica, while the art direction yields fresh pleasures to accompany the casting disappointments (Jeff Goldblum with one line, I ask you). The (close to) final chorused caveat ('You can't wake up if you haven't been asleep') comes an hour and a bit too late.
