Artemisia (1997)

£0.00

Country: FR/GER/IT
Technical: col/Panavision 96m
Director: Agnès Merlet
Cast: Michel Serrault, Valentina Cervi, Miki Manojlovic

Synopsis:

In the early sixteen hundreds a painter removes his talented daughter from the convent so that she can work for him, but her sexual curiosity, ambition and seduction by a fashionable Italian artist lead to unhappiness for all.

Review:

Historically realistic as far as the minutiae of the artistic process during the birth of perspective are concerned, this biopic of the struggling female artist recalls Camille Claudel and scandalized art historians, particularly feminist ones, for its romanticization of the fact of its heroine's rape. It is good to look at, contains a typically fine performance from Serrault, but fails to convince the viewer that this woman was a great painter because we see too little of her at work and too much at play.
