Country: US
Technical: bw 125m
Director: Wesley Ruggles
Cast: Jean Arthur, William Holden, Warren William, Edgar Buchanan, Porter Hall

Synopsis:

A hard-headed business woman in Tucson sets her cap at a cowhand passing through. When the army abandons its post to take part in the Civil War, she falls victim to the predations of a tin-horn dude who gathers the local trash around him to fleece her.

Review:

Of interest mainly for its antiquated view of the early pioneer trail, this overlong Columbia western nevertheless sports a young Bill Holden; somewhat too young given the age of Miss Arthur (40) by this time, and their on-screen chemistry never quite convinces. William is an off-the-peg villain, Porter Hall injects a shade more humanity as his toadying sidekick, but it is Buchanan's inebriated JP who sweeps the character stakes. Pin-sharp monochrome cinematography but it's a long haul.
