Arabian Nights (1974)

£0.00

(Il Fiore delle Mille e una Notte)

Country: IT
Technical: col 155m
Director: Pier Paolo Pasolini
Cast: Ninetto Davoli, Franco Merli, Ines Pellegrini, Franco Citti

Synopsis:

Tales from the Thousand and One Nights are presented, Russian doll-like, one within the other.

Review:

Leaving the overt bawdiness and knockabout comedy of its European-set predecessors behind, this overlong homage to the eastern collection of tales is nonetheless just as preoccupied with sexuality. It is also interesting to note that the female characters are still intelligent, dignified creatures, while the men are all dullards who think with their genitals (themselves perhaps rather too repeatedly the focus of the director's gaze). As in other Pasolini films acting is subordinate to setting and the very physicality of his players, and he chose some stunning locations for this one particularly. The figure of the artist, represented formerly by Giotto and Chaucer (and Pasolini!) is present here in a more abstract form in the shape of various artefacts.
