Another World (2021)

(Un autre monde)

Country: FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 96m
Director: Stéphane Brizé
Cast: Vincent Lindon, Sandrine Kiberlain, Olivier Lemaire, Jerry Hickey

Synopsis:

The regional plant director of an American conglomerate suffers critical stress in both his private and professional life when his superiors demand that he and his associates find further redundancies among their employees.

Review:

The third of Brizé's 'world of work' films with Lindon, this is perhaps the best yet. In contrast with En guerre, it chooses a much more poised aesthetic, with classical vocal music adding to the sense of getting down to the essence of things. Instead of chaotic scenes of picket lines and handheld camera, the focus is on the toll for management of decisions taken miles away, merely to reinvigorate the brand share price. It dissects the cost in terms of family life (divorce and filial breakdown) and employee safety and loss of trust. In short, Brizé persuasively argues that we need 'un autre monde'.
