Anne of Green Gables (1934)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 78m
Director: George Nicholls Jr
Cast: Anne Shirley, Tom Brown, O.P. Heggie, Helen Westley, Sara Haden

Synopsis:

A brother and sister adopt an orphan to help out with the farming chores, but consternation reigns when 'he' turns out to be a girl. Initial misgivings soon give way, however, to an appreciation of her finer qualities: outspokenness together with a heart of gold, and the seesaw of emotions that come with parenting a teenage girl.

Review:

RKO lost little time in filming this children's classic, following on from a now lost silent with Mary Miles Minter. Dawn O'Day, a former child actress from infancy, even went so far as to change her name in honour of the leading character, a bold move considering the dangers of type casting. She grabs the part's possibilities with both hands and all three leads turn in nuanced and affecting performances, bringing out the simple charms of Canadian country life at the turn of the century, when communities were far more tightly knit.
