(The Seedling)

Country: IND
Technical: col 131m
Director: Shyam Benegal
Cast: Shabana Azmi, Anant Nag, Sadhu Meher, Priya Tendulkar

Synopsis:

A landlord's spineless, indolent son is sent to take up stewardship of one of his father's villages prior to settling down with his young wife. There he neglects proprieties and takes advantage of his maidservant's temporary separation from her deaf-mute husband, whom he has punished for pilfering palm wine.

Review:

A distressing and richly moving film about the fragility of India's caste system: the magnanimous young Master, who nevertheless treats everyone, even his own relations, with disdain, professes to disagree with it, but clings to his privileges and self-respect when the consequences of his 'liberality' come home to roost. Benegal films in luxuriant, luminous colour, and the young Azmi, who would become a leading light of the new national cinema, will break your heart as the beautiful servant girl, Lakshmi.
