Angel on my Shoulder (1946)

Country: US
Technical: bw 100m
Director: Archie Mayo
Cast: Paul Muni, Claude Rains, Anne Baxter

Synopsis:

Lucifer takes the lost soul of a murdered gangster back to Earth so that he can disgrace his double, an incorruptible judge about to become governor of New York.

Review:

Second rank afterlife comedy of the Here Comes Mr Jordan variety, with Rains more or less repeating his role and Muni riffing on his own in Scarface. Some opportunity for comedy is lost by his making no attempt to impersonate the hapless judge, which also draws attention to the unlikely coincidence of their resemblance. Meanwhile Baxter has to act as though she is still in love with a judge who acts like a lunkhead jailbird, then actually fall in love with him, only finally to switch back to the judge! She does very well, and the package cannot fail entirely to amuse.
