Angélique et le Sultan (1968)

(Angelique and the Sultan)

Country: FR/IT/GER
Technical: Eastmancolor 105m
Director: Bernard Borderie
Cast: Michèle Mercier, Robert Hossein, Jean-Claude Pascal

Synopsis:

The Rescator sets off in pursuit of Angélique's captors and finds she has been carried off to Algeria to be added to the harem of the King of Meknès. For her part, she is fortunate enough to secure the friendship of her gaoler, the King's lieutenant, staving off the day when she must choose between death or dishonour.

Review:

The last in a series of Angéliques featuring Mercier (chief Bardot rival) and directed by Borderie. Costume nonsense of the Arabian Nights variety, feeding the 60s' appetite for gaudily produced exotica, and with no cliché left unturned. Not quite as brisk or as raunchy as number 4, in spite of the subject matter (in fact the two were filmed back to back from the same book); but it is brightly and capably produced in what look like Moroccan locations, and has an enjoyable performance from Pascal as an educated eunuch looking every bit like Conrad Veidt (who could never be a eunuch).
