And Then There Were None (1945)

Country: US
Technical: bw 97m
Director: René Clair
Cast: Walter Huston, Barry Fitzgerald, Louis Hayward, June Duprez, Judith Anderson

Synopsis:

Eight unsuspecting guests are invited to a remote Devonshire island for the weekend by an alleged friend of an acquaintance. They, along with the butler and housekeeper, soon find themselves marked for death by an unseen host in retribution for unpunished murders they have each committed.

Review:

Classic character acting and an imaginative production, combined with the director's lightness of touch, make this the superior version of the well-known tale, Ten Little Indians. The mixture of comedy and the macabre recalls The Cat and the Canary, though neither is played to the level of that masterpiece. Indeed the confidently roguish Lombard (Hayward) is almost too unconcerned by events, and his and la Duprez's reformation in time for a last-minute reprieve is perhaps a light touch too far.
