Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

(Anatomie d'une chute)

Country: FR
Technical: col 151m
Director: Justine Triet
Cast: Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Graner, Antoine Reinartz

Synopsis:

The husband of a successful writer suffers a fatal fall from the loft he is insulating, and she is indicted for unlawful killing. While legal counsels torment over what is and is not credible, the widow and her young son deal with the reinterpretation of past events in their lives as a family.

Review:

In fact it is not entirely clear what she is indicted for, nor are we sure whether she is guilty (a snatched memory shot would suggest that she is), omissions which can test the patience at this great length. One is left to admire the performances, which are very good, though Reinartz is rather better than Hüller. Another Cannes Palme d'Or which seems to reward a single-mindedness of purpose more than any particular narrative flair. A couple dynamic that leans on the feminist side, with a mother-provider who is bisexual to boot, incorporates a nod towards voguish gender concerns; at least three other characters are androgynous in hue.
