Synopsis:

1933: U.S. Army veterans belonging to a former regiment of 'outcasts' find themselves implicated in the foul play surrounding the death of their commanding officer, and uncover a nefarious plot to overthrow the democratically elected government of the United States.

Review:

Russell toys with themes such as medical philanthropy, the nature of love, freedom vs responsibility, while unfurling an Andersonian plot in which small people wrong foot the Byzantine schemes of big business greed and corruption. It misjudges its irresistible whimsy once or twice on the way to an extraordinary finale, in which the opposing parties seem to hold a conference rather than abide by a contest of strength, but rarely loses our attention nonetheless. Finally, it unveils its trump card by juxtaposing De Niro's speech with that of an actual General who similarly exposed a plot aimed at the heart of American political life, in other words Russell's inspiration for all that has gone before. The title, meanwhile, is about as much a red herring as Philadelphia (1993).
