(Love's a Bitch)

Country: MEX
Technical: col 153m
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Cast: Emilio Echevarría, Gaël García Bernal, Vanessa Bauche, Goya Toledo, Alvaro Guerrero

Synopsis:

Three interlocking stories involving love and dogs in Mexico City.

Review:

Examining the dog fighting culture of the Mexican underclass through its story of a hothead in love with his brother's wife, the film also less expectedly deals with the privileged milieu in the shape of a crippled model and her advertising executive lover and the quixotic in the figure of El Chivo. The tone varies from the shocking to the wrily humourous but the invigorating direction concentrates on close shots, tightly cut in grainy colour. Evocative music and original structuring made this one of the best portmanteau films for years.
