American Splendor (2003)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe Toronto 101m
Director: Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini
Cast: Paul Giamatti, James Urbaniak, Hope Davis, Judah Friedlander

Synopsis:

A Cleveland file clerk, twice divorced, despairs of ever amounting to anything. Then, inspired by a friend's comic book designs, he begins to chart the details of his life in comic strip form. Before long this elevation of the humdrum, morose and downright quirky gains national celebrity.

Review:

Quite original blend of comicstrip, documentary and reconstruction, reminiscent of Ghost World in its milieu and dark cynicism. The actors are well chosen for their resemblance to the subjects and the whole thing is a refreshing antidote to the emotional string-pulling of Hollywood entertainments: one doesn't know whether to laugh or weep at times.
