A chilling but tastefully done horror drama, no 'Saw' imitation, this. Cinematography and special effects are top notch, and Isabelle achieves a frightening intensity as the young medical student whose initiation to punitive surgery (not actually adumbrated on screen) leads from economic need to a consuming obsession. Avoiding ghettoisation thanks to its production values and relative restraint, the Soskas' picture joins Dead Ringers, Exotica and Love and Human Remains as a typically Canadian 'high-art' oddity.
