American Gangster (2007)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 157m
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin

Synopsis:

A bodyguard for a Harlem crime boss determines to take over and become stronger than all his opposition by importing heroin direct from South-East Asia. A police officer studying for the bar stumbles upon him and makes it his mission to nail him.

Review:

A gangster pic like so many others, with trademark fits of random violence and pretensions of grandeur in its absurd running time. At times it is like watching a Scorsese and a Lumet film combined, but someone forgot to make room for character, so that Washington simply gets to look stern most of the time and Crowe scruffy. One longs for the pithy style of such as The French Connection to leaven the familiarity of the generic trappings.
