American Buffalo (1996)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 88m
Director: Michael Corrente
Cast: Dennis Franz, Dustin Hoffman, Sean Nelson

Synopsis:

Three of society's no-hopers, including a junkshop owner, scheme and fight to attain their slice of the American dream by ripping off a coin collector who has purchased a rare buffalo nickel at the store, doubtless for a fraction of its true value.

Review:

Value, including that which we place on our friendships and scruples, is one of the themes Mamet explores in this early theatrical work. The language is choice, his mastery of the rhythms of vernacular speech already in place, but the film has little to offer seekers of easy messages. Beneath the surface, however, lies an implied critique of the thrusting, callous entrepreneurship that has characterized American capitalism since the time of the buffalo themselves. The acting is first rate, the details of the plot hard to follow and sometimes only partially exposed.
