Alvarez Kelly (1966)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 116m
Director: Edward Dmytryk
Cast: William Holden, Richard Widmark, Janice Rule, Patrick O'Neal

Synopsis:

During the Civil War a property speculator and cattleman is forced by Confederate guerrillas to help them steal 2500 head from under the noses of the Union troops and drive them back to Richmond.

Review:

Uneven historical actioner with redneck Rebs and clownish yankees, and cynical, cigar-smoking, 'I look out for number one' Bill Holden playing to type. There are sadistic trimmings, a well-stocked whorehouse that looks like something out of a Matt Helm film, and a finale that seems to want to replay that of another bridge (on the Kwai) but is even more muddled in its psychology. The Holden-Widmark character arcs are strictly conventional, with the one becoming more noble and the other less hardline, but the sparring was more convincing when Stewart and Kennedy did it for Anthony Mann.
