Allied (2016)

£0.00

Country: US/GB
Technical: col/2.39:1 124m
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Jared Harris

Synopsis:

During World War Two a Canadian Air Force intelligence officer hooks up with his French opposite number to assassinate a high-ranking Nazi in Casablanca. Mission accomplished, they fall in love, return to Britain and marry, but fate holds one unexpected card up its sleeve.

Review:

Dramatically wide-ranging, retrofitted hokum with adult trimmings. Like Spielberg before him, the director uses WW2 to broaden his palette, with plentiful haemoglobin on display, and both actors, who share the majority of screen time, delivering nuanced performances; however, notwithstanding their alleged personal chemistry and well publicised romance, the relationship never quite leaps off the screen and the script dooms the film to end on a whimper. That said, it was refreshing to see film-makers doing something new with the old 'behind enemy lines' scenario.
