All or Nothing (2002)

£0.00

Country: GB/FR
Technical: col 128m
Director: Mike Leigh
Cast: Timothy Spall, Lesley Manville, Alison Garland

Synopsis:

In a South London borough, three families living in a tower block struggle against the bleakness of their lives, some with a stoic acceptance, some with cheery bonhomie, most (the younger generation) with an uncomprehending snarl of revolt.

Review:

A return to the subject matter of Bleak Moments, Life Is Sweet and others, and the pessimism of Naked, this does in fact provide a glimmer of hope for its characters. Nevertheless, Leigh clearly intends the film as a wakeup call to the desperate plight of a whole section of contemporary society: an elder generation in work but with all the doubts and weaknesses inherent in a species conscious of its own lack of significance; a younger generation which senses this doubt and lack of meaning and finds refuge of one form or another. The picture is less caricatural than such as High Hopes, but by the same token more heartfelt and appealing.
